Pet transport in Japan

When your pet cannot move

Call a veterinary clinic before moving a seriously ill or injured pet. The wrong handling can worsen pain or injury.

Check first

For breathing difficulty, major bleeding, collapse, suspected spinal injury or inability to stand, call a clinic immediately and follow its handling instructions. Keep yourself safe from pain-related biting.

What to do now

  1. 1

Describe what happened, current breathing, consciousness and bleeding to the clinic by phone.

  2. 2

Do not force the pet to stand. Minimise twisting and keep the head, neck and back as stable as practical.

  3. 3

For a small pet, use a firm carrier. For a larger pet, use a blanket or rigid board only with enough helpers and clinic advice.

  4. 4

Confirm the destination, route, vehicle space and who will support the pet during transport.

Choose the right kind of help

Own vehicle or taxi

Protect the vehicle and secure the carrier. Ask the driver before booking and do not assume pets are accepted.

Pet transport service

Confirm the service area, equipment, total charge and whether it is transport only.

Veterinary or emergency advice

Some clinics may suggest a safer method or a service, but availability differs. Call first.
