Pet loss help in Japan

What to do when your pet dies in Japan

You do not have to decide everything immediately. First keep the body cool, then check local rules and compare cremation services before booking.

1. The first three steps

  1. Move the body to a cool, quiet place and place a pet sheet or towel underneath.
  2. Wrap cold packs in a towel and place them near the abdomen. Replace them as they warm.
  3. Decide whether you want the ashes returned, then compare municipal and private options before booking.

2. How to keep the body cool

Gently arrange the body without forcing the eyes or mouth closed. Fluid may appear after death, so use towels or pet sheets and change them when needed. In warm weather, cool the room and contact a service early.

3. Municipal procedures

Rules differ by municipality. If your dog was registered, contact your municipality about the required notification. Ask whether municipal collection or cremation returns ashes; some services do not. Check the official local page before applying.

4. Cremation choices and costs

Municipal service

Check acceptance rules, price and whether ashes are returned.

Group cremation

Usually not suitable when you want individual ashes returned.

Individual cremation

Confirm return of ashes and whether attendance or bone-picking is included.

Mobile cremation

Confirm the service area, suitable location, travel charges and total price.

5. Compare pet funeral services

6. Frequently asked questions

My pet died at night. Must I choose a cremation service now?

No. First cool and prepare the body. You can compare services the next morning unless the room is warm or the condition requires faster action.

Will a municipal service return the ashes?

It depends on the municipality. Some group processing services do not return ashes, so check before applying.

What is the main difference between group and individual cremation?

Group cremation is performed with other pets and is generally not suitable for individual ash return. Choose individual cremation if return of ashes matters to you.

Can flowers, food or toys be cremated together?

Rules vary by facility and material. Ask the chosen provider what and how much is allowed.
